Is forex trading legal in Ethiopia?
No Ethiopian regulator licenses retail online forex brokers. The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) oversees the new capital market and the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) controls foreign exchange. Ethiopians who trade forex use offshore brokers, with no local protection.
Can I send money abroad to fund a trading account?
The NBE's Directive FXD/04/2026 (February 2026) relaxed many foreign-exchange rules, but it doesn't open a route for individuals to send money abroad to trade. Outward investment still needs NBE approval case by case. Speak to your bank first and avoid informal transfer agents.
Can I use an international card?
The 2026 directive lets banks issue internationally usable cards to foreign-currency account holders. Whether your bank allows card payments to a broker, and whether the broker accepts them, varies, so check with both before you rely on it.
Can I trade in birr (ETB)?
None of the brokers we cover offer ETB accounts or Ethiopian local payment methods such as telebirr. You would trade in US dollars.
