How to choose a forex broker in Africa

Five checks that matter more than bonuses or leverage โ€” with the brokers we rate scored on each one.

Step by step

  1. Check the licence in your own country first. In South Africa look for an FSCA licence, in Kenya a CMA licence. Nigeria has no licensed online forex brokers yet โ€” SEC Nigeria published draft rules in September 2026 โ€” so Nigerians trade with offshore entities. A local licence means a local regulator and complaints body you can actually reach.
  2. Confirm which company you'd sign up with. Big brands run several companies. The one named in your client agreement is the one whose licence protects you โ€” often an offshore entity even when the brand has an African licence.
  3. Check you can fund and withdraw locally. M-Pesa, EFT, local bank transfer or mobile money keep costs down. A rand, shilling or naira account saves you a currency conversion on every deposit.
  4. Compare the real cost of trading. Look at the typical EUR/USD spread on the account you'd actually open, plus any commission, plus withdrawal or inactivity fees.
  5. Test support and withdrawals with a small amount. Deposit a little, make one trade, withdraw. If that's slow or difficult, it won't get easier with more money.

Leverage: why more isn't better

Offshore entities advertise 1:1000 or more. Under the CMA in Kenya leverage is capped at 1:400. High leverage doesn't change a strategy's odds โ€” it makes each loss bigger. Most retail CFD accounts lose money.

Red flags

  • No licence number on the website, or one that belongs to a different company.
  • A "manager" on WhatsApp or Instagram offering to trade for you.
  • Bonuses that lock your deposit until you hit a trading volume.
  • Being asked to pay a "fee" or "tax" before a withdrawal.

FAQ

Is an offshore broker illegal?

Not necessarily for you as a client, but you have much weaker protection if something goes wrong. Prefer a broker licensed where you live.

What's a good minimum deposit?

Many good brokers start at $10 or less. A low minimum is useful for testing withdrawals before you commit more.

Should I choose the broker with the highest Radar score?

Use it as a shortlist. The best pick depends on your country, payment method and platform โ€” use the filters on our compare page.
