How to get paid by a prop firm in Africa

Passing is half the job. Here's how payouts reach traders in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and the rest of the continent โ€” and how to avoid delays.

The three main ways to get paid

  1. Crypto (usually USDT or USDC). The most widely offered option. You give the firm a wallet address and convert to rand, naira or shillings on a local exchange. Fast, but check the network (for example TRC-20 vs ERC-20) โ€” sending to the wrong network can lose the funds.
  2. Rise. A payroll platform many prop firms use. You get paid into a Rise account, then withdraw to your bank or to crypto. Some firms add a fee for Rise payouts, so check the firm's terms.
  3. Bank transfer (international wire). Paid in US dollars over SWIFT. It's slower, and your bank may charge a receiving fee and convert at its own rate. A USD (domiciliary) account can help you control when you convert.

Some firms also pay to e-wallets such as Skrill. Here's what the firms we track offer:

Step by step

  1. Check payout methods before you buy. If a firm only pays in crypto and you can't use crypto, pick another firm.
  2. Get your KYC documents ready. Firms verify your ID before the first payout. Use the same full name on your firm account, your ID and your bank or exchange account. A mismatch is a common reason for delays.
  3. Set up your receiving account early. Open and verify your Rise, exchange or USD bank account before you're due a payout.
  4. Use a regulated local exchange for crypto. Check it's registered or licensed with your country's regulator (for example the FSCA in South Africa).
  5. Request your payout as soon as you're eligible. Note the date and the amount, and screenshot the request.
  6. Keep records for tax. Prop payouts are usually treated as taxable income where you live. Keep every payout confirmation, and ask a registered tax practitioner how to declare it.

If your payout is late or denied

  • Ask the firm in writing for the exact rule they say you broke, with the trades involved.
  • Check the firm's stated processing time before you escalate. Many process within 1โ€“3 business days.
  • Post a factual account on Trustpilot or Forex Peace Army, and tell us โ€” we track payout complaints and they affect our trust score.
  • Be wary of anyone who offers to "recover" your payout for a fee. Recovery scams are common.

FAQ

Can I get paid straight to M-Pesa?

We haven't confirmed any of the prop firms we track paying directly to M-Pesa. Traders in Kenya usually receive crypto or a bank/Rise transfer and move it on from there.

What's the fastest payout method?

Usually crypto, once the firm has approved the payout. Bank wires are the slowest.

Do I pay tax on prop firm payouts?

Generally yes โ€” it's income. Rules differ by country, so check with a registered tax practitioner.
